10 Ways to Grow Strong and Long Nails

Do you want to grow your nails long, strong, and beautiful? This post will show you simple ways to get the nails you’ve always wanted.

There are many things you can do to achieve healthy and long nails that don’t break, but they all have one thing in common. They all require consistency.

What that means is that you can’t expect your short and brittle nails to grow long and strong in a week. All those posts you see that claim you will get super long nails in a week might be a slight exaggeration.

Being realistic and consistently making good choices, however, will get you there.

With that being said, let’s get into what you’re really here for – ways to grow those nails.

10 Ways to Grow Strong and Long Nails

1- Nutrition is everything

Nutrition is a key factor in how your nails grow and how strong they are. The healthier your diet is, the stronger your nails will be.

If you have brittle nails that break easily and don’t grow, you might have to assess your health for any deficiencies.

A diet rich in vitamins, protein, and healthy fats can help you get to your nail goals. Adding foods such as salmon, nuts, leafy greens, and fruit are great for your nails.

2- Supplement if necessary

There are many supplements you can take to make your nails grow stronger if you want to go that route. Thankfully there are lots of different supplements for hair, skin, and nails on the market.

These supplements, like any others, are there to supplement a healthy diet- not replace it. Therefore, if you do opt for help from supplements, you should also follow a balanced diet to get the best results.

If you’re looking for some good supplements to start taking, these gummies are highly rated, and this collagen powder is also a good choice.

3- Oil your nails

Oils are wonderful for making your nailbeds stronger and your cuticles soft and moisturized.

You can go the natural oils route and use jojoba oil as well as vitamin E oil, which are both amazing for healthy nails. Alternatively, there are many nail oils on the market that also do a good job.

4- Drink enough water

Drinking water is vital for all-over body health, nails included. Staying hydrated by drinking water helps nails stay moisturized and healthy.

Many of us struggle with drinking enough water, even though it’s one of the best things you can do for your health.

Something that can help you stay hydrated is setting alarms throughout the day to remind you to drink. Alternatively, using a bottle that has timestamps can also help you stay hydrated.

5- Keep your hands covered when doing housework

Doing things around the house that involve cleaning supplies and water can be damaging to your nails. Using rubber gloves is an excellent solution to this, as they are made to keep your hands safe and dry.

If you’re not yet using gloves to do your housework, this might be a good time to start. Not only will your nails benefit from them, but your hands will also not lose moisture and stay hydrated.

6- File your nails in one direction

While nail files are necessary for a nice manicure, they can also damage your nails if not used properly.

The correct way to use nail files is to file in one direction only. Filing in both directions can be very damaging. Filing the nail slowly is also another way to preserve the health of your nails when filing them.

7- Manicures can help you

Some people claim otherwise, but a manicure can actually keep your nails from breaking. A manicure such as a gel mani is actually a great option for those of us with nails that tend to break easily.

What the gel does, is it creates a few extra layers of protection on the nail. After the gel is cured under the lamp, the nails are a lot stronger than they were before the gel was applied.

Most salons now offer gel manicures if you’re interested in trying one out for yourself!

8- Let your nails breathe occasionally

Give your nails a break from time to time between manicures. Your nailbed can use a break every once in a while.

It could be helpful to have a few days off from manicures every month and instead work on hydrating your nails with oils and lotions.

9- Go to a skilled manicurist

Choosing your manicurist wisely is crucial to healthy nails. When you get your nails done next, pay attention to how your manicurist removes your old polish, and what technique they use during your manicure.

If they rip off your previous gel polish or acrylic, run for the hills and never go back. If you get cut more than once during your manicure, time to find a new manicurist. If they paint the polish so close to your cuticles that the polish touches them, that’s also a big no-no.

Find someone who takes care of your nails and treats them gently. It will help you massively in growing them long and strong.

10- Stop biting your nails

Biting your nails and picking at your chipped nail polish do your nails no favors. By biting your nails and chipping away at your nail polish, you are most likely removing a few layers of your nails which results in brittle nails.

Good Housekeeping has helpful tips on how you can stop messing with your manicure to keep your nails looking as good as the day you got it.
