These Habits Will Help You Achieve The Perfect Smile
1- Brushing correctly
We’re starting off with the basics here. Having nice teeth starts with brushing them the correct way. You might be brushing your teeth wrong and not even know about it, so here’s the simple rundown:
First of all, you should be using the correct toothbrush. Did you know that most dental professionals do not recommend using a hard bristle brush? Those can cause receding gums and may damage your enamel. It is best to use a soft bristle brush. Here are some good choices you can browse through.
Now onto how to brush your teeth. You should be brushing for 2 minutes twice a day, using small circular motions. Angle your brush at 45 degrees, and start brushing. Not too vigorously, but not too gently. You can set a timer and that will help you not go over or under your two minutes of brush time.
2- Using dental floss
Flossing is a step in your oral health routine that you should not skip. Our teeth have 5 sides. When we only brush instead of also flossing, we are neglecting two whole sides of our teeth, the sides where our teeth touch.
So adding flossing to your dental routine will help you get into the spaces that are too hard for your toothbrush to reach.
If you’re new to flossing, you might experience some bleeding from your gums. This mostly happens because of the plaque that has been sitting in between your teeth. The more you floss, the less bleeding you will have until it stops. So don’t get scared if you bleed a little when you start flossing, just keep at it daily and that will eventually go away.
The best way to floss is to get about 2 feet’ worth of dental floss, which is very affordable and found anywhere you can find toothpaste. Wrap it against your fingers so that you have a short and tight portion of floss to work with. Then, gently put the floss in between two teeth and slide it from the top to the bottom of one tooth, going all the way up from the gums. Then do the same with the adjacent tooth, and keep going until all your teeth have been flossed.
When to floss is a question that had come up a lot during the research for this article. It turns out it is best to floss before brushing, as that will remove the plaque and bacteria from in between your teeth first, and then you can brush it away when using your toothbrush. You can floss once or twice a day. If you choose to floss once, opt for flossing at night to remove bacteria that could otherwise linger in your mouth all night.
3- Do not rinse your toothpaste
You read that correctly. Dental professionals advise you to spit out as much toothpaste as you can, and not to rinse your mouth afterward. That is because fluoride and other toothpaste ingredients can linger in your mouth for a longer time, helping to clean your mouth and strengthen your teeth more.
You can do this every time you brush your teeth, or just at night.
4- Go to your dentist checkups
Many of us hate going to the dentist because of the fear attached to someone working on the inside of our mouths. If this is you, try to work on eliminating this fear. It’s simple- you need to go to the dentist.
What is scarier to you? Going to the dentist regularly, or finding out that you have to do invasive teeth procedures because you’ve been neglecting to go to the dentist? I’m guessing it’s the latter.
Going to the dentist for a checkup and cleaning is crucial for oral health. They can clean your teeth better than your toothbrush can, and they can check for anything that could turn into a big problem for you down the line.
Schedule a dentist appointment twice a year if possible, and if not, once a year should suffice.
5- Straighten your teeth
Getting braces or some kind of retainer is the only way to give you a straight smile. Those often take a few months at least, but they’re the only way to straighten your teeth.
These days there are many different ways you can fix your teeth. Invisalign is a popular method now because of how invisible they look in your mouth. They are more expensive than traditional braces, so it all depends on what is best for your case.
If you’re worried about the costs of teeth straightening, talk to your dentist about your options. Most dental offices have payment plans which can really help you if you don’t want to spend that much money at once.
6- Teeth whitening
When most of us think about having the perfect smile and nice teeth, we think of white teeth. White teeth for most are more attractive than stained or yellow teeth.
If the color of your teeth doesn’t bother you, that’s amazing. But if you’d like to whiten your teeth a few shades, there is more than one option now. The most traditional option for teeth whitening has always been going to the dentist and doing it there. However, teeth whitening strips are becoming more and more popular these days, because they work and are much more convenient.
These Crest strips have some of the best reviews for any at-home whitening strips. You may want to pair them with toothpaste for sensitive gums since they can cause some sensitivity.
7- Don’t let foods that stain your teeth linger
Coffee, tea, wine, and various foods we eat are known to stain our teeth, and that can cause discoloration over time.
If you consume anything that is known to stain your teeth, make sure to drink water or swish water in your mouth afterward and brush your teeth briefly. This will help to keep your teeth white for much longer.
8- Use straws for acidic drinks
Drinking acidic drinks, such as orange, apple, pineapple, lemon juice and drinks like Coke can be harmful to your teeth. Acidic drinks ruin the enamel of our teeth, and that is something that you can’t fix once it’s ruined.
Your teeth will also end up looking more yellow the more of these drinks you consume which ultimately leads to sensitive teeth.
To combat this, you don’t have to give up on your favorite drinks. What you can do is drink them through a straw, as that minimizes the contact these drinks have with your teeth. If you don’t own some reusable straws already, this is your sign to get some.
9- Use mouthwash and a tongue scraper
Brushing and flossing only get to a small percentage of our mouths, around 30%. This means that our inner cheeks, tongue, and everything else does not get cleaned.
The best way to get your whole mouth clean is by using mouthwash and a tongue scraper. When choosing our mouthwash, always opt for an alcohol-free mouthwash. Alcohol causes dryness, and when your mouth is dry it does not smell fresh.
As for tongue scrapers, there are so many different ones to choose from. These will clean your tongue and get rid of the bacteria that is on it, leading to a clean and fresh-smelling mouth.
10- Stop smoking
If you’re a smoker, you run the risk of gum disease, bone loss, bad breath and even oral cancer. The best way to eliminate those risks is to simply stop smoking altogether.
If you know that there is no way you can stop, you should be going to the dentist multiple times a year for a checkup to make sure nothing is medically wrong with your mouth because of your smoking habit.
