Best sick day essentials:
How to feel better when you have a cold
In this post, I am going to be sharing some of my sick day essentials.
I don’t know about you, but I used to get pretty sick at least 4 times a year. Thankfully, this past year I got my very first flu shot, and I’ve only been sick once in the span of 6 months (knock on wood). The one time that I was sick though, I was reduced to bed rest for 3 days due to heavy fatigue. Fun, I know.
All I want to do when I don’t feel well is lay in bed and sleep. Until I get tired of sleeping and then spend the rest of my day lazying about the house.
I like to keep some things at hand when I don’t feel well, and I call these my sick day essentials. I find that they help make me feel a little more comfortable than if I don’t have them around.
These are not medical recommendations, just some things you might already have around the house. 🙂

Essential oils
I love diffusing essential oils when I don’t feel well, especially eucalyptus essential oil. Diffusing it all day helps clear my sinuses, which are the bane of my existence. Serious nasal issues.
Baths/hot showers
Most people say that you shouldn’t shower when you’re sick, but I feel SO MUCH BETTER when I do. Getting washed, moisturizing, and putting on fresh pajamas makes me feel so much less sick. Obviously, this is just my experience, but for me, it works wonders, especially before bed.
Herbal Tea
For some reason when I get sick, the taste of water repulses me. It’s really weird because I love drinking water, but when I get sick I stick to herbal teas. Not only do they taste great, but they also help soothe my throat and keep me warm.
Fluffy blankets
Because what’s better than laying on the couch all snuggled up and watching Friends? I purposefully specified that the blanket needs to be fluffy because those are clearly the best blankets.
My secret concoction
In a thermos add hot water, a piece of ginger root, honey, lemon slices and a cinnamon stick. Put in as much or as little of these as you like, depending on your taste. I don’t know what it is, but not only is the drink delicious, but it helps soothe my throat, and makes me feel a hundred times better the more I drink it.
A good book
I love Netflix as much as the next person, but my eyes get tired faster when I’m sick. Whenever that happens, I like to have a good book on hand. A bonus here is that reading usually makes me sleepy, so I get a read and a nap all in one.

Chicken soup
Yes, your grandmother was right! Chicken soup is great for when you’re feeling under the weather. Just make sure you’re eating real chicken soup, not the instant noodles kind.

Great list. Cozy blankets and Emergen-C are my must haves when I’m sick.

I’d add comfy pajamas or a onesie and cranberry juice or Gatorade to this list. Everything else is spot on. With cold and flu season approaching. I need to stock up on all these items.
