List Of Habits You Need To Break

List Of Habits You Need To Break:
These toxic habits are ruining your life

Many of us have a few toxic habits which can be damaging to our health, well-being, and success.

In today’s post, I am going to be discussing a list of habits and explaining why they are bad for us, as well as habits that you can get into to better yourself.

Personal development is more than just reading books and listening to podcasts. It also has a lot to do with looking at how you are currently living your life and what behaviors you are partaking in. Sometimes, we find that the things we do on a constant basis can be ones we could do without.

So without rambling on much longer, here are 10 toxic habits to cut out of your life to make you a better version of yourself.

Pin for later! πŸ™‚

List of Toxic Habits To Cut Out Of Your Life

Constant Negative Self-Talk

There is nothing wrong with having a reality check with yourself once in a while, but there is a healthy way to do it. Tough self-love isn’t meant to put you down or make you feel like you are not worthy of whatever it is that you want.

If you have a habit of always being negative about yourself, your achievements and your goals, then that’s a recipe for disaster.

A habit to replace negative self-talk: Try positive affirmations every morning. You might feel uncomfortable saying them at first, but you will get used to them.

Gossiping

Gossip is a very toxic habit and one that everybody should work on quitting.

Gossiping should be minimized because of a few reasons. First, it is damaging to the reputation of the person you are talking about. Second, a lot of gossip is based on lies, anyway. And last, it shows YOU in a negative light.

A habit to replace gossip: Automatically change the conversation when somebody starts to speak ill of someone else, or simply excuse yourself.

Bad sleeping habits

This is a very common one, but I had to touch on it! Sleep is one of the most important things for our health and well-being, and many of us struggle with getting enough of it.

If you are guilty of not getting enough sleep, try going to bed half an hour earlier every night and see how that affects your body.

A habit to replace bad sleeping habits: Create a relaxing nighttime routine.

Procrastinating

There is nothing wrong with taking time off to recharge and do nothing once in a while. However, there are times when procrastinating can be a toxic habit.

This can play a negative role in your life when you have deadlines, goals, or when your loved ones are in need of your help.

A habit to replace procrastinating: Eliminate distractions when you know you have to work on something. I have a whole post on how you can stay productive if you would like more tips!

Being ungrateful

This is a toxic habit that really can mess with your mindset and keep you from reaching your potential.

Being ungrateful about the things you have been blessed with comes off very negative and it can hinder you from getting more out of life.

A habit to replace being ungrateful: Write three things you are grateful for every day.

Bad finances

Finances are harder for some of us to master than others, but thankfully there are many things you can do to help you manage your money.

Financial stability is something you can learn about by reading personal finance books, as well as reading personal finance blogs and budgeting.

You don’t have to stay broke all your life, but you do need to make the effort to change your bad financial habits.

A habit to replace bad finances: Learn how to budget. Budgeting is the first step in becoming more financially-savvy, and the benefits are huge.

Not drinking water

Water makes up most of our bodies and while we already know that drinking water is good for us, sometimes we just don’t drink enough.

Thankfully there are a few things you can do to drink more water throughout the day.

If you are someone who doesn’t enjoy the taste of water, add fruit to it. Do you forget to drink water altogether? Keep a reusable bottle of water with you at all times.

A habit to help with drinking more water: Set reminders on your phone throughout the day to remember to drink water.

Showing up late

There is nothing cute or “fashionable” about showing up late.

It is rude and disrespectful to the person you are meeting and really does you no favors. Especially in the workplace, or when meeting somebody new. It really doesn’t give off a good impression.

A habit to replace showing up late: Make it a habit to start getting ready earlier than you usually do. If you usually take 30 minutes to get ready, start getting ready an hour earlier. Chances are, if you get ready earlier, you will leave your house earlier than normal and be at your destination on time.

Overspending

Overspending can be a toxic habit because it can get you into a lot of financial trouble.

We live in a world now where people sometimes think that they need to have the latest phones, cars, clothes, and handbags. Sadly, all that does if you can’t afford it is leave you with credit card debt that you will have to pay interest on and spend more money than you actually had to.

A habit to replace overspending: Get in the habit of saving and paying for things using your debit card. If you can’t pay for it using a debit card, you can’t afford it.

Negative friends

Who you surround yourself with has a very big impact on how you feel about yourself and on your actions. People who constantly put you down and don’t support you should not be the kind of people you surround yourself with.

A habit to replace hanging out with negative Nancys: Focus more on self-care and on making yourself feel good.

Love these points! I always feel like sometimes they start to interlink and you just end up in a right mess – however, there is only one way up! I’m really focusing lately on things that are going to make me feel good and good general life habits that will put me in a better position in future. I don’t think it matters if you have messed up a little, what’s important is you change for the future and learn from your mistakes!

I love this! It a long time to cut out toxic family and friends, but when I did it was liberating! That being said, I need to get it together when it comes to my finances. haha

Thanks for sharing this Mariam! I think it’s helpful to get a reminder every once in a while that we all have toxic habits but we can change that. Overspending is definitely a toxic habit I have.. it’s something I try working on.

Procrastinating is definitely my thing! I still get stuff done because I procrastinate by doing less urgent tasks, but I always end up putting myself under so much pressure to complete things by doing it.

Ooh I’m actually quite relived to see that I don’t do many of these anyway! I’m usually SO grateful for everything and I’m never, ever late. I absolutely hate being late. I don’t procrastinate either. Sleeping habits… I guess I could work on that one!

I really, really hate lateness. I’m always at least 15 minutes early for everything but I have a family member who is chronically late and it drives me up the wall. I just find it SO disrespectful of other people’s time, and the fact that they don’t usually apologise or even think there’s something wrong with it makes it worse! Aaand breathe…
I’ve been working on changing my procrastination and honestly, getting better with sleep has tied in with it! I’m less likely to put things off when I’ve got a lot of energy.

Thank you so much for sharing this, it is so super important to detox our lives from toxic people and things that harm us, that prevent us from moving forward and making progress. They also prevent us from developing and maintaining self love and worth.

Some great ideas and some make uncomfortable reading when you realize that they apply to yourself! Easy to see how some habits have become ingrained over a lifetime. Reaching out like this and having dialogue is a really good start. Thank you for this post.

Amazing round up! You are thorough & deliver this tough message gracefully. There are several reminders here for me to continue working on. I want to share the power of overcoming cracking joints daily, neck and knuckles especially in front of other people. It’s liberating to be in control of this habit. Best of luck.
