Have you been thinking about starting your personal growth journey? It might feel a little overwhelming with the surplus of information available, so in today’s post, I am going to be sharing a few simple ways in which you can begin your own personal development path.
What is personal development?
Personal development, or personal growth, is the act of improving oneself in various areas of life. It can be mental, emotional, physical, or even monetary bettering of yourself. The great thing about personal development is that you can start this in any area of life you feel you could use a change in.
There are numerous things you can start doing, slowly, in order to better yourself. I absolutely don’t recommend doing everything all at once, unless you like a challenge and are up for a total makeover, so to speak.
How long does it take to complete your personal development journey?
That totally depends on you, your goals, and how badly you want to better yourself. Some people reach their goals quicker than others and then call it quits, and others are constantly learning and improving themselves.
I personally think that we are constantly evolving and changing, and therefore it is easy to always want to do something to become better than you were yesterday.
What are some areas you can work on with the help of personal development?
Literally anything can be worked on, depending on your goals and aspirations.
Here are some areas you can work on:
- mental health
- emotional wellbeing
- physique
- physical wellness
- style
- finances
- spirituality
- public speaking
- career goals
- mindset
- productivity
- creativity
- relationships
- family life
The list goes on and on!
Read on to find out how you can start a simple personal growth journey.

How To Start Your Personal Growth Journey
1- Have a goal
A goal without a plan is just a wish.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
In order for you to create the life you’d love for yourself, you need to specify what you actually want to become. Is your goal to become a great listener? Are you willing to work on your physical health? Do you have the dream to one day become a successful CEO?
Narrow down your goals and keep them around you every day. This will help remind you of these goals and you will be more likely to work on them more often.
A great way to keep your goals in one place is by using a vision board. My post on how to make a digital vision board is perfect for any girl, or guy, on the go because you can have it on you at all times.
Along with a vision board, planners and to-do lists are also a good way to keep track of your goals. If you’re not using a planner or a to-do list, I highly recommend using them.

2- Have a “why”
The next thing you should be doing in order to reach your personal development growth is having a “why”. What this is, is simply a reason for why you are working on yourself.
This differs from person to person, which is great, because your “why” is yours alone.
To figure out what your “why” is, just ask yourself questions.
For instance, if one of your personal development goals is to work on your finances and become financially-savvy, ask yourself why you want that. Your answer could be anything from paying off debt, to building generational wealth, to traveling the world, to buying nice things.
Once you have your “why”, it is easy to then bring yourself back to that place of discipline when you don’t feel like working towards your goals. It is easier to get back to it when you remind yourself why you’re working on it.
3- Read personal development books
Something that many people swear by is reading books on personal development. Knowledge is power, and there are books on literally anything you want to work on.
For mindset, I recommend this list of law of attraction books. If you’re someone who is looking for financial advice, this list of personal finance books is a great place to start. For overall personal growth, these are some of my favorites I highly recommend checking out.
4- Surround yourself with like-minded people
Your network is your net worth.
Tim Sanders
Who you surround yourself with has a major correlation with how fast or slow you can reach those goals of yours. If the majority of people around you are negative, not ambitious, and don’t have any plans for growth it will be very hard for you to stick to your goals.
It’s always beneficial to surround yourself with people who have achieved what you want to achieve in life. Not only do you get to see the daily habits of these people, but it’s the easiest way to get motivated when you see that around you all the time.
For some daily habits of successful people, you can check out my post here.
5- Do something each day for your personal development
Baby steps towards your goals is the way to get there. Often we go into things head on, which can work for some people who prefer tunnel vision. However, if you’re not one of these people, start slow and steady, and build momentum until you are happy with how you are progressing.
The key is to form habits that will overtime become a regular part of your daily routine.
6- Eliminate limiting beliefs
Often what stops people from achieving their goals and working on themselves is the fear of not being good enough. The mind is a powerful thing, and eliminating limiting beliefs is the first step towards personal development.
Working on this can be tough, but building confidence and believing that you are worthy of bettering yourself will help you get there faster.
To do this, you can read books, blog posts like this one and watch videos of how others have overcome their limiting beliefs in order to go after their goals and dreams.
7- Be patient
Lastly, patience is going to be your best friend.
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your personal development journey. It takes time to become a better you, especially if you’ve only just begun your transformation.
Take it day by day. If your goal is to read more, read one chapter a day. You’ll be done with the book sooner than you’d think. If you’re looking to become more physically fit, a walk every day can lead to a run in a couple of months.
Taking it day by day, being consistent, and being patient are what will help you get there.
Conclusion
I hope you have enjoyed this post on how to start your personal growth journey! Everybody has their own goals and aspirations so it’s totally up to you how to approach yours, but I do hope these tips help you.

I would love to create the online vision board, attempted to do so with Canva – thought this would be free, but discovered it is only a free trial and that my payment information would be required before accessing the free trial. Unfortunately, that is not free to me. Is there another way to create a digital vision board? Thank you.
Hi! There is a free version of Canva, you should be able to just create a free account instead of a free trial. Alternatively, you can use Pinterest and make a board of images that inspire you.
