A new year = a new start right? There is never a good or bad time to start better yourself and developing better habits. The new year is always a great time to start as a lot of people around you may be starting new habits as well so it’s helpful to be surrounded by this environment.
Habits are hard to form. There’s always an ongoing debate on how many days or how much time it takes to fully develop a habit. The most common response is 21 days. I think it takes a lot longer especially when you’re trying to correct bad habits that you might’ve built.
We all start somewhere and that’s what counts. Do you tend to focus on fresh healthy habits to pick up for the new year? Or do you start at any time of the year?
Here are 7 Healthy Habits to Pick Up for the New Year:
More sleep
The first of many healthy habits to pick up for the New Year is to get more sleep. It’s no secret that getting more sleep comes attached to positive health benefits. I admit, sleep is hard for me and I don’t necessarily get the suggested 8 hours of sleep a day but I have been getting better at going to bed and winding down earlier.
Here are some ideas to make getting more sleep easier:
- Limit your caffeine intake
- Screens off at least an hour before bed
- Set up a time for you to be in bed every day
- Light a cozy candle or diffuse a lavender essential oil

Disconnect from your phone
There is so much content being put out there every minute of the day from all around the world. So many trends get started every day and it is hard to choose what to consume! Everyone expects to go on their phone for 5 minutes but end up going on there for hours. It’s important to take the time and disconnect from your phone and set time aside for it.
Whether it’s a 4-hour break, one day break, or a 5-day break, disconnecting from your phone can do wonders in productivity and overall mental wellness.
Here are some ideas to make disconnecting from your phone easier:
- Schedule time every week for it
- Do something self-care related
- Get some fresh air or go for a walk
- Instead of turning off your phone, set it to DND
Eat more whole
Have you ever heard of the term “you are what you eat”? As we are going through the everyday hustles of life, sometimes, it makes sense to slack on our meals. Food is energy and gives you the fuel and nutrients your body needs to feel like your best self.
Although, tempting, try and limit your intake of unhealthy foods and insert more whole foods into your diet. Your body and mind will thank you!
Here are some ideas to make eating more whole easier:
- Create a weekly menu
- Meal prep
- Shop at local farmers markets
- Try new seasonal produce
Fresh air
I’m the type of person who lives off fresh air. Even through the Winter I try and crack a window open. When it gets too cold that I can’t, it definitely affects my mood.
Whenever weather permits, it’s awesome to go outside and get some fresh air. Even if it’s a short walk or just sitting in the garden. A few moments of fresh air does wonders to the brain.
Here are some ideas to make getting fresh air easier:
- Eat lunch outside every day
- Check your mailbox every day
- Walk around the block
- Do something self-care-related outside eg. painting
Positive affirmations
Positive affirmations are all about confidence. It’s about knowing and claiming what you deserve and want in life. Reciting affirmations has gotten so popular today because it works!
There are so many positive affirmations out there on self-love, relationships, wealth, anxiety etc. Find what area in your life you’re looking to focus and improve on and find a few affirmations to stick with.
Here are some ideas to make positive affirmations easier:
- Make it the first thing you say out loud when you wake up
- Post it on a wall where you constantly look at
- Get an affirmations journal and write it out daily

Set smaller goals
Setting goals is something that gives me an adrenaline rush. I love planning for my future and setting goals helps me achieve the future I want. I get so tied up in it, I admit sometimes my goals are unattainable and I go into a spiral of feeling like a failure.
Taking baby steps is not a bad thing. It may seem like you are taking longer to get to where you want to be but it is all the same big picture. Setting smaller goals sets you up for success and makes it easier to accomplish.
Here are some ideas to make setting smaller goals easier:
- Creating a vision board for your big goals so you don’t feel like they’re getting away from you
- Reassess your goals weekly or monthly
- Set realistic time frames
Shop more intentionally
Last but not least in this healthy habits to pick up for the new year article, shopping more intentionally. It’s so no surprise that after the holidays, everyone is all shopped out and January becomes one of the slowest months in retail.
Everyone might still have a few things on their wishlist they didn’t get during the holidays but before purchasing anything, take a step back and evaluate the need for this item. Ask yourself questions like “Is this what I really want?” or “Will I use this frequently?”
Here are some ideas to make shopping more intentionally easier:
- Make a list of everything you want to buy within the next few months and add a priority level
- Look for different variations of that item to ensure you are purchasing something long term
- Think about Quality over Quantity

Love the tips. My favorite would have to be getting more fresh air. There are so many more to do such as walking in nature, hiking and gardening. This brings a smile to my face and makes me feel good. 🙂
