Are you wondering how to look expensive without spending a lot of money? In this post, we are going to be looking at a few ways in which you can look like you tried really hard without it costing you a whole lot.
Looking good and feeling great in your own skin does not have to cost thousands of dollars. There are some key things you can do in terms of beauty and style that will help you look your best.
We have all probably heard of the saying “When you look good, you feel good.” That is very true for many people, as to how we look has a direct impact on how we feel most of the time.
It really helps with self-confidence to look nice and clean. People will treat you so much better, too, because they will be able to tell that you are someone who expects quality.
Disclaimer: In this post, I am in no way saying that you have to dress a certain way if you don’t want to. If these tips don’t sit well with you, it might be because you prefer a different look. And that is perfectly fine! This post is for those of us who want a more leveled up and classy look, rather than overly trendy.

1- Keep your makeup neutral
The first rule to looking expensive on a budget is to keep your makeup on the neutral side.
Rather than wearing bright, bold colors, opt for browns, taupes, and soft mauves depending on your skin tone. Bold makeup can be beautiful, however, it does not have the same classy and timeless vibe as a neutral look, especially for daytime.
Keeping your makeup look neutral also helps you enhance your features rather than hide them, and ensures a polished and classy look no matter the occasion.
If you’re not comfortable with wearing makeup, you can totally skip it. Alternatively, just use mascara to make your eyes pop, or invest in a good shade of lipstick. The key here is to enhance your natural beauty and make you feel good. If makeup doesn’t do that, feel free to skip it.
2- Choose quality fabrics
Fabrics play a very big role in your overall look. Try to avoid materials like some polyester blends which can look a little cheap and wrinkle easily. Not to mention, these cheaper fabrics don’t last a long time and can go completely shapeless after a few washes.
While we know that fabrics like silk and cashmere are on the more expensive side, there are good fabrics that won’t break the bank.
Some good quality fabrics you can start investing in that look expensive are linen and cotton, for example. These fabrics last, and keep their shape and look after several washes, unlike some other, more affordable fabrics.
3- Avoid cheap replicas
While I’m all for women buying what makes them feel good, replicas of known high-end brands can look really tacky. I also want to stress that brand names don’t necessarily make you look expensive.
What makes you look expensive is dressing smartly and in good quality pieces. Just because something has a high-end logo on it does not make the look more expensive looking.
You’d be better off investing in quality clothing that is tailored to your frame, and subtle accessories that are also of good quality.
If you’d been thinking about getting a knock-off version of something designer, why not put that money towards a well-made outfit, bag, or pair of shoes instead? Not only do these pieces last the test of time, but they will make you look a lot chicer and put-together than designer replicas.
4- Don’t over-accessorize
Another good tip that will help you look expensive on a budget is to not go overboard with the accessories. Too much accessorizing can lead to a bit of a gaudy look which is fine for some people, however, not very expensive looking.
A good rule of thumb to follow when accessorizing is to not have more than 3 accessories on. So, you could have on a hat, a ring, and some sunglasses. Or a ring, earrings and a bracelet.
Of course, you can add more than 3 pieces, but keeping them at a minimum looks more timeless and classy.
5- Invest in timeless pieces
Quality over quantity definitely wins time and time again. Because quality clothes can be more costly than some cheaper fabrics, it’s best to buy timeless rather than trendy pieces.
Not only can those be styled in many different ways, but they can also be washed and worn for many years. Therefore, investing in quality timeless pieces will pay off in the long run.
Some good quality, timeless pieces every woman should have in her closet are:
- A blazer in a neutral color.
- A simple white tee. This one is not see-through!
- A good pair of jeans.
- A structured bag.
- Neutral heels.
- White or black sneakers.
6- Keep your hair looking nice
Having nice, presentable hair is a simple but sure way to look polished on a budget. You don’t have to do any elaborate hairstyles, but clean and styled hair will take your look to a whole new level.
I also want to point out that having nice hair can be achieved with any hair texture, so please don’t think that you need to straighten your hair for it to look presentable.
There are so many hairstyles that look amazing on textured hair, so definitely head over to Pinterest for some hairdo inspo. If all else fails, a low bun will always look polished and chic!
7- Keep your nails simple and clean
Even though long, colorful acrylics look beautiful and are very trendy now, nothing will ever beat a simple and classic manicure.
If you do prefer to wear your nails long, try neutral colors for your manicure. The more simple you can get your nails to look, the more polished they will look.
Colors like nudes, pinks, reds and burgundy are the perfect colors to choose when getting your nails done. Not only do they go with absolutely every outfit, but they are also good matches for most skin tones.
8- Wear minimal jewelry
For jewelry, stay away from super trendy pieces that might go out of style soon. Classic pieces are always a safe option and good quality pieces will also stand the test of time.
You don’t have to spend a lot on jewelry, either. Good quality pieces can be affordable, and all you really need to mix and match are some earrings, a necklace, a ring, and a bracelet.
9- Be mindful of hygiene, and smell good
Good hygiene should be your top priority when it comes to your image. Feeling and smelling fresh really take your look to the next level and make you look like you know how to take care of yourself.
Something that does tend to get expensive where hygiene and smelling good are concerned is fragrance buying. Many great, long-lasting perfumes can cost a lot of money, but there is a solution to that.
If you have not heard of ALT Fragrances yet, let me put you on to this amazing website. They make very good and long-lasting dupes of popular perfumes for men and women, and are a fraction of the cost of the real perfumes.

10- Avoid wearing wrinkly garments
If you want to look expensive and like you have your life together, hear me out. Ditch the wrinkly clothes and steam your garments before putting them on.
These days, so many people skip this step and it can make your overall image look very sloppy. All it takes is a few extra minutes from your day, but it can make a world of a difference.
Having steamed or ironed clothes elevates your whole look and it definitely is noticeable when your clothes are all wrinkly.
